My Writings on Various Topics

Over the course of my life I have written about quite a few things. These include scholarly articles, several magazine articles, and writing for my own sake. I find that whenever I am stuck on a problem, writing about it always helps clarify it as well as helping me remember the problem once it has passed. Below are links to some of my public and private writing organized roughly by subject.
Education
-
IEEE Potentials student magazine article trying to get students to hold universities more accountable for their education.
-
Article from ECE department newsletter on challenges in learning.
Games and Learning
-
White paper on why college should be restructured based on games.
-
A video on why games should serve as a model for reforming education.
-
A second video explaining how to adopt ideas from games into education.
-
How to hybridize college's DNA with ideas from games.
Less Serious Writing
-
A parody Self Assessment letter I submitted to after achieving tenure
-
Trying to "creatively bargain" our way into a new spectrometer
-
My editorial calling for a ban on meetings three days out of the week.
-
The bumper sticker I made for the 2008 presidential elections (compared to the real thing)
Miscellaneous
-
A list of color codes developed for marking optics in my lab
-
A letter to a friend's daughter on her high school graduation...
Others' Wisdom & Motivation

For too long in my life I valued intelligence. Probably due to lack of popularity, good looks, or athletic ability in high school. But placing too much value on your own intelligence is a sure path to misery since it leads to competition with those you need to learn from and not listening to those who provide a more valuable commodity, wisdom. And wise people are not as easy to find as smart ones.
Over my life I have tried to collect thought that seemed wise (both my own and others) because such wisdom seems quite ephemeral and harder to find as we become more focused on displaying and less on reflecting. And because life is hard, that which is wise also motivates.
