• In an October 26, 2004 email to the faculty, President Mitchell asked CAFA to work with the administration to finalize the various award and renewal criteria for the new merit scholarship/financial aid program (see below), and to work with Vice President Thiede to ensure that the goals of the merit aid program are made more explicit. He left it up to CAFA to determine when to report to the faculty on these issues.

Recent Business

• In the September 2004 faculty meeting VP for Enrollment Management Kurt Thiede presented a new sholarship/financial aid plan with a merit merit component funded from the existing financial aid budget. After discussion of the presentation and the report by the Committee on Instruction and its sub-committee, the Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid, the following motion was passed: "The Faculty requests additional time to consider the important educational implications of the proposed changes in the merit system before they take effect. We request recommendations for Faculty action on this matter from COI at the November faculty meeting. CAFA and its parent committee COI will generate recommendations regarding the future of Merit scholarships to be considered by the Board of Trustees and will report on this to the faculty in the fall of 2005."   The Committee on Admissions and Financial Aid collected additional written opinions from the faculty, and held an open forum on September 29. This feedback was forwarded to President Mitchell. President Mitchell's response was articulated in an email sent to the faculty on October 26, 2004.
