"Buckhannon Delta" Thursday, October 14, 1875:
Mr. John B. Brake, one of our oldest citizens died at his residence near Buckhannon Friday morning, October 8, 1875. He was standing on the porch of his dwelling, talking to a little boy, when he suddenly threw up his hands and fell backwards upon the floor dead, and was not seen to breathe after falling. His remains were followed to the cemetery on the Heavner farm, by a large procession of relatives and friends, and interred there Saturday. Mr. Brake was over 86 years old, was born in Hardy Co., Va., in the year 1788, moved to what is now Upshur County in 1799, and therefore resided in this county 76 years. He had eleven children of whom are yet living, also 51 grandchildren and about 40 great grandchildren. The deceased has been a member of the Baptist Church for near 60 years and was honorable in all his dealings with this fellow man.

Charlotte Virginia Little b. 23 Feb. 1845
Robert Alexander Franklin Little b. 26 Jun 1847
Mary Loomis was the daughter of Sophia Sexton Loomis, the second wife of John B. Brake Mary's grave is one of the marked graves which were moved from the Baptist Church Cemetery to Heavner's.
"Elmore Brake was an easy going sort of person, honest, a Republican, and in religion a Baptist. He usually had in his home one or more poor relations, or other `hangers--on' who either worked for `board and keep' or a small wage. He owned and operated a farm on Brushy Fork, near enough to the town of Buckhannon, Upshur Co., to hear the church bells ring.
He was three times married; his third wife was Mrs. Charlotte Malone, a widow, and a sister of his second wife, Harriet Little. This was a marriage of convenience as a housekeeper was needed and took place Sept. 12, 1886, following her sister's death Feb. 21 of the same year.
The oldest son of Elmore (George J. Brake) was a soldier in the Union army, serving 3 years and 9 months. He was wounded and taken prisoner, but by dressing in women's clothes and walking between two colored women, he was fortunate enough to elude the pickets, and thus made his escape."

Obit from "Bone Gap Progress", November 1893
Purtamia Rude died November 19th in Bone Gap, IL, aged 72years and 11 days. She was born in Lewis County, West Virginia, on November 8th, 1821; She married to David Sears Rude, October 20, 1837. And coming with him to this place, they entered the piece of land and built a log cabin in which they ever after lived.
Her husband preceded her to the better land 15 years ago. Sister Rude was converted at the age of 14 years and lived a devoted Christian for nearly sixty years. At the time of their removal to this place they stopped with a Brother Shurtleff until they could build their little log cabin. When completed Brother Rude took his young bride to see it, and although at that time he was not a Christian, as they entered it he said to her, Purtamia pray. They knelt down and she led in prayer, and from that time until death took her home the family altar has been kept up.
In 1840, the first Methodist Class was organized in this community and she was one of the ten that composed it. Through all these years she has been intensely loyal to her church and her pastors found in her an earnest, sympathetic counselor and helper.
History of Edwards Co., IL - David S. Rude
David S. Rude was born in Worthington, Mass, December 11, 1912. His parents, Alpheus and Hannah Rude (nee Taylor), were of the goo old Puritanic stock who have contributed so much to make all New England revered for steadfastness and morality. The family sought for and found a new home in Lewis county, Virginia, in 1819. Here the subject of this sketch was reared. In 1835 he left his home to try his fortunes in Illinois, and for two years worked for wages, receiving for his labor seven and eight dollars per month. During the winter he got out cord-wood, receiving twenty-five cents per cord for cutting. He husbanded his resources and entered land. In 1837 he returned to Virginia to marry the girl of his choice, Purtamia Brake, which he did October 20, same year. His bridal tour was a tedious journey back to Illinois to the broad acres he had predetermined should become his home. Two years after he identified himself with the Methodist Episcopal church, of which he was ever after a most zealous, faithful member. For nearly forty years he was the circuit steward, and for much of the time he was a class-leader and Sunday - school superintendent... Mr. Rude did well in life, being one of the best farmers in his neighborhood.... He died January 28, 1879...Mr. Rude was an active man of business, a devoted husband, a fond father and a model citizen.

For 60 years he was a member of the Baptist Church of Buckhannon, and through the many years of his life he had endeared himself to the hearts of his fellowman.
He was a very active member of the church and his life was a testimony of his loyalty to his Lord. When his physical powers had failed he was still held in high esteem as an honorary officer of the church.
The funeral services were conducted at the church, Monday, January 16, by the pastor Rev. J.D. Vannoy assisted by Dr. Hyre D. Clark, a long time friend of the deceased.
