Questions/Comments about Grades

Thu, Apr 24, 11:49 a.m. - Has there been any thought about the grade boundaries? Will an A be lower this semester than last semester? How does setting those work? Thanks

Let me start by describing the process. We total the scores for everyone and sort everyone into a list. Then we look at where to insert the grade boundaries into the list. We guarantee that a 90% or higher will be at least an A-, an 80% or higher will be at least a B-, etc. We don't make any promises about where the A/A- line will go, or the B+/B line, etc.

We potentially move the boundaries if it looks like the exam averages have altered the distribution of scores in the course. In years with low exam averages, the A-/B+ line might be moved to 89 or even 88. In years with higher exam averages, we might not move the line below 90.

We don't plan ahead at this stage of the semester with the grade boundaries, because of course the final exam results will play a large role. I can say the three midterm exams have combined to an average of 77.3, which is a very typical value for our course. If the final exam turns out also to have a typical average, then we may be moving the grade boundaries a little but not a lot. We'll see how the final goes!

Sat, Mar 29, 11:46 p.m. - if there is not a belonging survey, can you remove it from our grades page?

Good point, and thanks for pointing that out. It's been removed. Sorry for the confusion.

Thu, Mar 27, 10:45 p.m. - Is it true that in Check Score page, "Lab (150 pts for participation, and 15 pts for Practicum 1 and 50 pts for Practicum 2)"? Or the practicum 1 is 30 pts?

That was an oversight. We forgot to update that from last fall. It should now correctly say that practicum 1 and practicum 2 are each 30 points. Thanks for pointing that out!

Sun, Mar 16, 10:12 a.m. - Under check scores it says our course grade is an F?

That was a glitch. Thanks for bringing it to our attention and it should be fixed now.
