Overview:
This course introduces core concepts underlying the
structure and function of the Internet and internetworks in
general. While the focus in lecture is on these core components
(packets, routing/switching, and protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP, and
services like DHCP, SMTP, ...), in our projects we will look to better
understand the most popular network applications in use today,
including web browsing, email, instant messaging, streaming content,
peer-to-peer sharing, etc.
Time Commitment:
It is reasonable to say that you will get out of
this course what you are willing to put in. The assignments will
largely consist of small group projects and a more individual final
project.
Textbooks:
Required: Fifth Edition Computer Networks: A Systems
Approach. Peterson/Davie, here.
Available in the advanced lab: Java Network
Programming. Harold (a little old)
