Notes for Eli RINEHART
Eli enlisted in the Confederate Army at Camp Clover Lick, 1 Jul 1863. He was a PVT in Co. F., 20th VA Cavalry. Was admitted to several CSA hospitals due to FUO. Surrendered at Clarksburg, WV 25 Apr 1865 and held there for a day. He was paroled for exchange and released 26 Apr 1865. Description: age 30, light hair, 5'6", fair complextion, and blue eyes. [5] 1880 Lewis Co. census, Hacker's Creek, lists Eli, age 47, farmer, Almira 39, wife, Maud E. age 12, Floyd W. age 10, Abram W. age 8, Evert age 3. All are listed as born in WV. So we now know that Almyra had at least one more child after her second marriage to Eli.
Notes for Almyra Arminta MARPLE
Almyra was a widow at the age of 25 yrs. and gave birth to her third child a month after her husband, Elam, died. She remarried on 6 Apr 1873 to Eli Rinehart in Upshur Co. One child from her 2nd marriage--Everett M. He died at age 15 yrs from thyphoid fever. Almyra died from inflammation.
Elam was a chaplain in the Confedrate Army during the Civil War. He was captured and released from Rock Island Prison in Rock Island, Illinois in apparently poor health. He traveled back to WV to bring his wife and family to Bryant, Illinois because he thought he had a better chance for success there. He died a few months later and Almyra returned to Buckhannon and had her 3rd child just 5 weeks after her husbands death. Marjorie Conley Reed has a picture of Elam and Almyra when they were both probably in the early 20's.
When Almyra remarried, she left her 3 children in the home of her parents where they showed up in the census records for Upshur Co. Even tho she was only married to Elam for approximately 5 years, and her marriage to Eli Rinehart lasted almost 15 years, she was buried next to her parents with the surname ROBINSON. Eli is buried next to his 1st wife and their children. Also, even though Almyra and Eli were married and she was apparently raising his children, her own children were living with her parents.
