8:00 a.m.: Meet at Vienna's Jackson Memorial Park
community building for registration and coffee-and-doughnut breakfast (we'll
have juice and water on hand for non-coffee drinkers). Following breakfast, Dr.
Bernard Allen, formerly of WVU-Parkersburg, will deliver a brief lecture on the
Parkersburg Jacksons and early oil development. After breakfast, we depart on a
caravan-style tour of Parkersburg family-related sites, including a stop at
Wood County Courthouse for the Historic Landmarks Commission's rededication of
the James M. Jackson fountain / bust, scheduled for 10:30. Other details on the
tour have yet to be finalized. We expect a loosely organized tour, with the opportunity
for folks to break for lunch and explore on their own.
6:00 p.m.: Re-assemble at community building for
a catered banquet (ham, Italian
chicken, red skinned potatoes, green beans, rolls, pie, tea (sweetened and
unsweetened) and coffee). After dinner, we will be entertained by Connie
Bookman with a selection of fiddle tunes and Stephen Cassle's a living history
interpretation of General "Stonewall" Jackson.
Directions: From I-77,
take the Emerson Ave./Vienna exit and
go South on Rt. 68. Continue 3
miles to stoplight and turn right on
Rosemar Rd. Go 2.5 miles and turn left into Jackson Memorial Park (between ballfields). Community building is 1
mile on the right.
1:30: Catered picnic on Blennerhassett
Island, featuring KFC chicken, biscuits, mashed potatoes and baked beans.
Following the meal, Dr. Ray Swick, of the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional
History, will deliver a lecture on local history. The reunion will conclude
with our memorial service and business meeting. (The sternwheeler from
Parkersburg's Point Park to Blennerhassett Island departs on the hour,
beginning at 12:00 on Sundays. If you are not assisting with hauling and setup,
you may prefer to take the 1:00 excursion. The
20-minute boat ride to the island is $7 for adults, $6 for children 3-12,
roundtrip (rates subject to change). The price of the picnic does not include
the boat ride, so individuals must pay for their own tickets to the island.)
Reservations are required for all events, including the breakfast and tour.
Reservations must be received by June 30, 2004
(reservations form attached).
Hoping to arouse
that famous Jackson sense of duty, we're asking for volunteers for the
