Pre-Reunion
Get-together and Tour - Friday, August 6, 2004
Reservation deadline: June 30, 2004
Return form to Ann Fissel / RR2 Box 335 / Cairo, WV 26337
On
Friday, we'll meet for an informal noon lunch at the home of Dan and Ann Fissel
in Cairo, WV. After lunch, we'll take a caravan-style tour of family-related
sites in the Cairo-Cisco area, including the homes of Henry J. Jackson and his
son, "Cisko" at Cisco. We also hope to visit nearby Pribble Cemetery
and additional sites. (Be aware that the tour will be about 30 miles roundtrip,
will likely involve some walking and will last most of the afternoon, so it
will be of interest mainly to Henry Jackson descendants and those who just
can't get enough family history.) Returning, we'll explore Cairo, including
historic Marshall Hardware (founded by Jackson descendant R. C. Marshall) and
the Ritchie County veterans memorial. At the end of the day, Ann will treat us
to a supper of North Carolina-style pulled pork barbecue sandwiches and
fixin's.
Although this is a free
event, registration is required so that we may plan adequately.
If you
have a set of walkie-talkies, please bring them with you for the tour. We will
also be asking for volunteers to share vehicles for the tour—especially
four-wheel drives, and we're looking for some local volunteers who can supply a
few fold-up chairs, both for the tour and for the meals.
1. From Parkersburg, take U. S. 50 EAST approximately 20 miles / From Clarksburg, take U. S. 50 WEST approximately 57 miles. 2. Take the exit for Cairo / North Bend / WV State Route 31 (from the West, this is a left turn, from the East, a right). 3. Follow Route 31 south for about 5 miles to Cairo. 4. At Cairo, take a right on Water Street over a bridge, across from a large red brick building (Marshall Hardware). 5. After crossing the bridge, stay on this road approximately 100 yds., and take the second right (the first right after passing over the North Bend Rail Trail) on to Alley. Follow Alley approximately 100 yds., then take a right on Silver Run Road. The Fissel home is the fourth house on the right--a yellow house with green trim.
