Jackson Brigade
2004 Reunion
Just a few
final words and up-to-the-minute briefs about the upcoming reunion. You’ll also
find maps and directions to the Fissel home (Cairo) and Jackson Park (Vienna)
on the back of this page.

Please try to be on time for
all events!
We’re running a very tight schedule on Saturday, particularly, which will allow
little leeway for tardiness.
Ø
Plans for Saturday’s tour--led by Professor Bernard Allen, formerly of
WVU-Parkersburg--have changed. After his breakfast talk, Dr. Allen will lead a
caravan-style tour of family-related sites in Parkersburg / Vienna, beginning
at Jackson Park, meandering through the Julia-Ann Historic District, and ending
at the courthouse, where we’ll attend the re-dedication of the Jackson bust /
fountain. Following the ceremony, Dr. Allen will lead a short walking tour of
the courthouse area. Then we’ll break for lunch (we recommend Third Street
Deli, just two blocks from the courthouse). The tour will continue after lunch,
with stops at the Parkersburg Art Center (for the Lily I. Jackson exhibit),
Riverview Cemetery, and Quincy Hill Park, before ending at City Park’s Jackson
Fountain. Please note that you’ll be
paying for your own lunch as well as admission to the Art Center (currently $2
for adults, free for children). We’ll plan to have drinks and snacks available
on the tour.
Ø
General Jackson will be with us in the person of George Moor, from
MacDill AFB, Florida, replacing Stephen Cassle for Saturday’s banquet. The
General will speak to us regarding the influences of Napoleon Bonaparte and
Margaret Junkin Preston on his own philosophical underpinnings. Following
General Jackson’s talk and a selection of fiddle tunes by Connie Bookman,
George will speak to us briefly on General Jackson’s four different uniforms,
hats, sabers and horses.
Ø
Tickets for the sternwheeler ride to Blennerhassett Island on Sunday
may be purchased at Point Park (currently $8.00 / adult; $7.00 for children
3-12). The boat departs for the island at the top of each hour, beginning at
noon. The picnic will begin at 1:30, giving you a choice of whether to embark
at noon or 1 p.m.. For those volunteers who will be carrying items to
the island, we ask that you arrive at Point Park in time to meet with other
volunteers before the noon departure.
We’re still looking for
volunteers who may be provide help with the following:
Remember: It will be August, and we’ll be spending a lot
of time outdoors.
Please wear loose clothing and comfortable shoes!
