Obituary for James Duncan Jarvis
Died 7 July 2003

CLARKSBURG -- Mr. James Duncan Jarvis, age 55, of Rt. 1, Clarksburg, WV, died Monday, July 7, 2003, at his home.

He was born April 22, 1948, in Clarksburg, the oldest son of the late James Melville Jarvis and Maud Lee Duncan Jarvis.

Mr. Jarvis is survived by one son, Kyle Laslo, his sister and brother-in-law, Maud Lee and Bill Quinn, his brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Becky Jarvis, nephews, Mike and Brian Jarvis, and nieces, Libby Jarvis Giebel, Amy Albert, M.D., and Jennie Jarvis.

An avid outdoorsman, he loved to hunt deer with his nephew and son; ride spirited horses; ski Cupp Run; fish for walleye, marlin and trout; kayak the New River; and climb the Rockies.

A voracious reader, he was well informed about modern history, read current fiction and enjoyed heated political discussion. He played the acoustic and electric guitar and enjoyed listening to the blues. He grilled ribs to perfection and won more often than not at poker.

Mr. Jarvis managed Crane Construction Company in Clarksburg. His desire for adventure led him first to South Carolina, where he had a construction company, then to Colorado, where he owned a residential roofing company and once put roofs on 1,600 homes in one year.

He also served as a guide for rafting on the Colorado River, skiing in the Rockies and trail rides on horseback.

His farm and horses were a focus for him in recent years, where he built barns, trained his horses and surveyed the pastures from his Jeep Wrangler.

A builder of buildings and friendships, he was a wonderful brother, uncle, father and friend who was generous with his time and willing to help, whatever the need.

Family and friends may call at the Davis-Weaver Funeral Home, 329 East Main Street, Clarksburg, from 7-9 p.m. on Friday, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2003, at 2 p.m., with the Reverend Steven E. Dorsey presiding. Interment will follow in Bridgeport Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to: The American Diabetes Association, Attention: ADA Web, P.O. Box 1833, Merrifield, VA 22116, or the Humane Society of Harrison County, Rt. #2, Box 932, Shinnston, WV 26431, in his memory.
