The following is a continuation of the family of George and Elizabeth Brake Jackson first published in the Jackson Brigade Express Newsletter. This biographical sketch on Mary and Sylvanus Seely is from Memorial to the Pioneer Women of the Western Reserve, published monthly under the auspices of the WomanÕs Department of the Cleveland Centennial Commission, edited by. Gertrude Wickham, July 1896, Vol. 1, pp. 34-35.
"Mary Jackson, wife of Dr. Sylvanus Seely, was born in Clarksburg. W. Va., August 13, 1796. She was married at her fatherÕs home in 1817, and moved to Zanesville, O. Her family and friends parted with her in sorrow and tears, thinking they would never see her again, for although the distance to Zanesville was only sixty miles, it was across the Ohio River, and to them beyond the Ohio meant only an unbroken wilderness, peopled with hostile and treacherous Indians.
Her wedding dress was a pink crape, a peach blossom pink. It was very short-waisted, with full sleeves, and the skirt, which was slightly gored, measured just two yards in width around the bottom; a three-cornered lace handkerchief was worn about the neck.
Her father supplied her with ample goods and furniture for housekeeping. A high-posted walnut bedstead, a bureau of four drawers, with drop handles, some chairs and a table, a featherbed, bed clothing, table linen, towels, and dishes. After two yearsÕ residence in Zanesville they came to Howland on horseback with their baby Catharine. Their household goods were sent by wagon. Two years afterwards they came to Warren, living in a four-roomed, weather-boarded, log house on the west side of Park avenue, where RentfleÕs shoe store is. As Mrs. SeelyÕs father was a slave-holder, she knew very little about housekeeping when she was married. She soon learned and became a good cook and housekeeper. Mrs. Seely had a family of six children, four girls and two boys. She made a wedding dress for each of her daughters—Catharine, who married Lieutenant (Jonathon) Ingersoll in 1828; Jane, who married Cyrus Van Gorder in 1840, and Helen, who married Judge James M. Jackson of Parkersburg, W. Va. This was an afternoon wedding, so the young couple could take the stage for Pittsburg, and was a brilliant social event, Mrs. Seely taking great interest in it because her daughterÕs husband was to be a man from her own native State, Virginia. Mrs. Van Gorder is now the only daughter living, and resides on Pine street, and recalls with pleasure these earlier times.
In 1836 Mrs. SeeleyÕs sister, from Clarksburg, VA., visited her and expressed a desire to see Lake Erie. A party was made up and they rode on horseback to Painesville to view the lake.
In 1841 the family moved into a two story frame house further down on Park avenue, on the opposite side of the street, which was their home afterwards. Mrs. Seely was fond of reading, particularly the periodicals and newspapers. She enjoyed the society of young people, and the last years of her life were rendered pleasant by the kindly ministrations of her two great-granddaughters, whom she had taken to her home some years before, in their motherless childhood. She passed to her reward in 1875.Ó

Marriage bond on record in Harrison County, West Virginia BK5:59, Wm Williams listed as guardian. Marriage took place at the home of her father, George Jackson in Zanesville, Ohio. Sylvanus was born 1795 in Pennsylvania, and died Bet. 04 April 1847 - 04 April 1849 in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. Burial: Oakwood Cemetery, Warren County, Ohio. (One Ancestry.com source gave his birth as 5 January 1795, Green County, Pennsylvania, son of John Williamson Seely and Elizabeth Williams, another source has him born Honesdale, Wayne, Pennsylvania, same parents).

"Sylvanus, the son of Dr. John W. Seely, born in Pennsylvania in 1795, read medicine with his father. In the war of 1812 he entered the service and worked with Dr. John B. Harmon, being present with him at the attack of Fort Mackinaw. Having married a Virginia woman he went there to practice for a while, but returned to Warren and lived here the rest of his life. His widow Mary (Mary Jackson Seely, d/o of George Jackson) lived for over fifty years in the house next to the present fire department, opposite the former brick schoolhouse on Park avenue. It is still standing and is one of the oldest Warren residences. He died in 1849, having established a good reputation and practice. He was the father of Mrs. Cyrus Van Gorder and the grandfather of Mrs. John Kinsman." (History of Trumbull County, Ohio, p. 320)
"The Seely family, Dr. John W. and Sylvanus, were Howland people, and most of their lives were spent in that township. Sylvanus finally moved to town, and with his children, George and Jane Seeley Van Gorder (the mother of Mrs. John Kinsman), lived at one time in the house now standing on South Park avenue, just south of the fire department."

Catherine born ca 1817 was married and probably living elsewhere.

with father, F. Messerschmitt in Warren, mother not listed.

2. Catherine Elizabeth Jackson4 Seely (J. Mary Webster3 Jackson, George2, John1) was born 1817 in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, at the home of her Jackson grandparents. She married Lt. Jonathan Ingersoll 03 December 1837 in Canfield, Ohio4. He was born about 1805 in Connecticut, and died 1875 in Ohio. He probably died in and asylum in Cuyahoga County, Ohio.

It is unclear what happened to Catherine or where she was living from 1860 on. There is no listing for Catherine Ingersoll in the 1860 census for Trumbull County, Ohio, nor is there a listing for children Harriet, or Jonathan. Sylvanus, age 10, was found living with his grandmother in Warren. There appears to be a listing for Jonathan Sr. with his son Charles (J. Ingersoll, age 50, attorney at law and son C. (Charles, age 14) Ingersoll were living with the baker, O. J. Brooks and family in Warren. Catherine could have died and the children living with relatives. A Harriet Ingersoll, age 16, b. 1844 in Ohio showed up in the Joseph and Matilda Morris household in Philadelphia, Wd 5, Pennsylvania. She was married in 1866 in Pennsylvania so this might be the daughter of Catherine and Jonathan.

"Jonathan Ingersoll was educated for the United States navy, and when but a boy went on a cruise in the Old Constitution, going almost around the world. He resigned from the Navy in 1836, married Catherine Jackson Seely, a daughter of Dr. Sylvanus Seely in 1838. Having prepared himself for the law, he began practice, and about 1840 was clerk of the court of common pleas, which office he held for seven years. On July 16, 1850 census Warren Township, Trumbull County, Ohio, Jonathan was age 45, attorney at law, property valued at $400 born in Connecticut. Catherine was age 32 born in Virginia, Harriet age 5, Charles age 3 and Sylvanus age 4 months..all born in Ohio.

In 1870 Jonathan is residing in the Southern Ohio Lunatic Asylum, Newburgh, Cuyahoga County, Ohio, where he probably died. He was age 64, attorney, born in Connecticut.

Cyrus lived in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio. In 1870 he was age 55, with property valued at $8630 born in Ohio. Jane W. was age 50 and had some property valued at $370, born in Ohio and George S. Van Gorder was age 18, born in Ohio.
In 1880 Cyrus J. was age 59, Jane W. 57, George S. 27, a piano salesman. He was married to Eliza age 24 and had a son, Monroe J. 2 months, all born in Ohio.
In 1900 Cyrus was age 85, 60 years born in Ohio, his parents in New Jersey. He was born in April of '15, Jane W. was born April of 20, age 80 had 3 children/1 living, born in Ohio, father PA and mother WV. Monroe J. grandson born Jan. '80, age 20 and Lydia, grand daughter- in -law ,born Nov. '81 no children, born in Ohio.

Mary was still living in Youngstown at the taking of the 1930 census. She was 69, a widow born in Canada, her parents in Northern Ireland. She had immigrated to this country in 1865.

Sylvanus Seeley Ingersoll: questions about his
descendants?
Sylvanus is age 4, listed with his parents in Warren, Trumbull County, Ohio is 1850. In 1860 he was age 10, living with his grandmother, Mary Jackson Seely in Warren. He is referenced again at his marriage to Ida Mae Richardson in Indianapolis, Indiana on 31 December 1878. Then in 1880 Marion County, Indianapolis, Indiana census Sylvanus was age 26, a wood dealer, born in Ohio, his wife, Ida was age 19, born ca 1861 in Indiana, her father in KY and mother in Indiana. Everett was a 10 month old baby born in July according to the census. The July birth month conflicts with the October birth date of Charles Everett, see below.
After
this census there is no other reference to Sylvanus other than the Sullivan
County, Indiana Cemetery Records Vol. 3. p. 55 and death of 1933, per earlier
research by Jan Roach. The only Ida
Ingersoll in the census is consistently married to a John Ingersoll.
There is a WWII draft registration for Charles Everett Ingersoll or RR1, Hamilton Twp., Sullivan County, Indiana who was born in Marion County, Indiana on 1 October 1879. The contact was Ida Mae Ingersoll, RR1, Sullivan County.
In 1900 Jefferson, Greene County, Indiana, John Ingersoll, born Dec 1848, age 51, m 21 years (1879) born in OH, his father in OH and mother in Virginia (note this differs in every census reading) farmer, wife Ida, July 1861, age 38, 2 children/2 living, born in IN, father IN, mother KY, Everett, Oct 1879, 20, born IN and Earnest 15, Sept 1884, 15, IN.
In 1910, Hamilton, Sullivan County, Indiana, John Ingersoll 53 m1 31, Oh OH PA, Ida, age 48 m31, 2/2, IN KY KY, sons Everett 30, IN OH IN and James 24, IN OH IN.
1920 Hamilton, Sullivan County, Indiana, John Ingersoll age 70 OH OH OH, Ida age 58 IN IN KY and Everett age 40 IN OH IN. It was in Sullivan County where Jan found a cemetery reading for Sylvanus Ingersoll.
Living next door was James E. Ingersoll 35 IN, his wife Jennie age 24 and Helen age 7. (Ancestry.com). He married Lora Jane Holt in 1911 and ÒJennieÓ may have been a nickname for her. I do find a death reference for James Ingersoll in New Berlin, Wisconsin but the death date of February 1973 conflicts with our death date of 12 July 1972.
On Charles EverettÕs Draft Registration his contact person was Ida Mae Ingersoll of R. R. 1 Sullivan, Sullivan County, Indiana.
