Interesting Locales

• Weather: The UIUC Weather Machine has hourly weather maps; Michigan State University offers current weather maps and movies from a variety of satellites; also available are the local forecast and current conditions.
• Space: The NASA explorer site has beauty shots of my favorite planets and asteroids in JPEG form, plus a well-annotated directory of less spectacular GIF files, and some interesting animations. Also astronomical images from U Arizona, UC Irvine, Hubble, and NASA's Image Archives.
• Exhibitions and images: An ad-hoc directory of online exhibitions, including some good archaeology. Similarly, see the Egypt Archive, the UMich Classics and Mediterranean Archaeology index, and ANU's photo database of historical structures in the Mediterranean basin. The ArchiGopher server has Kandinsky, Palladio, & Greek architecture image archives. A visit to the Louvre is an unusually friendly experience with the French. Miscellaneous images are available through the Delft Digital Picture Archive. Many art resources are summarized at ArtSource.
• FAQ's: by group, by hierarchy, or in news.answers.
• Privacy and Security: The Privacy Forum, the cryptography FAQ, and the computer security FAQ.
• Films and filmmaking: Cardiff's movie database, best accessed through its US mirror; the MPEG Movie Archive, and a listing of Film and Video Resources.

Literature

• Books in many forms are listed by author at CMU's English Server. This combines listings from The Internet Wiretap, Project Gutenberg, and the Online Book Initiative (OBI). Many such projects are catalogued at Georgetown University.
• Magazines: The Electronic Newsstand has selected articles and back issues of magazines such as New Perspectives Quarterly and The New Republic. Elsewhere, Mother Jones and Wired have their own servers, but tend to be annoying.
• Poetry at the Internet Poetry Archive and the NCSU poetry database.
