Mystery Stone
Footstone at Jacob Brake, Sr.'s grave?
The above is a photo of a footstone, perhaps near Jacob Brake,
Sr.'s grave, (Brake, Hardy County, WVA)
which was face down when we found it, and appeared not to have been
disturbed in quite some time (the whole cemetery was again grown over in tall
weeds which we cut and removed). As the photo shows, the stone appears to say
"C-u 1789 A-G (or maybe A-C) 12." The headstone says the same thing, except
that it has "A-G (or A-C)" on the top, and clearly "C-8" on the bottom. Close
inspection shows the footstone inscription to also say C-8 and not C-u. These
two stones, and that of Catherine appear to be of the
same type stone, and cut in the same fashion. Although there is little to
indicate the stones are that of Jacob, proximity to Catherine's stone leads me
to believe they are his. [Anecdotal evidence indicates that Jacob's
grave may not be in the Brake Cemetery, but elsewhere in the immediate
area. So we don't know. Dan] Do any of you have any
clue on what these markings mean??
