Above: Brake School, Grant County, WVA, 1909. The Brake School was located in what is now the parking lot of the Brake Church of the Brethren (P.O. Box 831, Petersburg, West Virginia 26847; (304) 257-2344; http://www.cob-net.org/church/brake.htm). The Brake Church is on County Route 9 about four miles south of Petersburg. Though the Brake School was in Grant County, it was only six miles over the mountain from the settlement of Brake in Hardy County.

The picture is of the 1922 student body of White's Camp School in Rock Cave, Upshur County, West Virginia.

Note: Thelma, Wendel, Kemp (in Row #2), and Basil are offspring of Arthur Brake and Lucy Perry Brake. Kemp (in Row #1), Marybelle, Clyde, and Clovis are sons/daughters of Charley Brake. Other Brake students are sons/daughters of Lee Brake. Teacher Ruth is the daughter of Gordon Battelle Brake.
Perry "Buzz" Brake's Dad is "Basil" Brake above, but he changed his name to
"James" as a young man. Buzz doesn't blame him!
